Hi.

When I became a mom, I searched for a blog that resonated with every part of me: the nerdy kid, the ansty teenage feminist, the wayward 20-something, the ambitious career woman, the writer, the traveler, the wife, and yes, the mother. I couldn’t find that blog, so I wrote it. Welcome.

Beating the Heat with the NewAir Portable Air Conditioner

Beating the Heat with the NewAir Portable Air Conditioner

Recently I was contacted by the compact appliance maker NewAir. They told me they liked my blog and asked if would like to review one of their portable air conditioners on it. My first thought was, “Yay! Someone other than my mom reads my blog!”  My second thought, was “A portable air conditioner? Couldn’t they send me something cooler?” (No pun intended.) Because if you look through their website, they also some very sexy things like wine fridges and cigar humidors. Not that I smoke, but who doesn’t want to give a tour of their house and casually point out the humidor?

We have an older home, full of charm and character, but the heating and cooling is extremely uneven. (You can’t have it all, right?). At night, this means if it’s a comfortable temperature in the master bedroom, our two-year-old is shivering in his room. Or (more common), if our little guy is sleeping comfortably, my husband and I are sweating and constantly searching for the cool spot on our pillows. So, as much love as I have for wine fridges, an air conditioner was quite literally the answer to our problems.

It’s hard to admit I’ve entered the phase of life where I get excited about appliances. I’m telling you though, I AM EXCITED. First off, the time from opening the operating manual to feeling cold air blow on my face was fifteen minutes, max. It was so easy to set up it made me feel like I had a PhD in electrical engineering instead of a nice, well-rounded liberal arts education. Because here’s the thing about me: I am an unabashed feminist who also cannot figure out how to change the batteries on the smoke detector. It’s okay, I’ve made peace with it. I have many other important life skills, like knowing how to use a semicolon and being able to sing nearly every TLC song from memory.

The second thing I loved was that it was fast. After ten minutes I felt a difference, and after twenty I felt the delicious thrill of goose bumps, enough to need a blanket as I snuggled in to go to sleep. A blanket! Hallelujah! I can’t remember the last time I was cool enough to go to sleep tucked under the covers.

Finally, and possibly what I loved most about this air conditioner, is that in the morning I just pushed it into the corner of the room and forgot about it the rest of the day. It’s sleek and small and didn’t feel obtrusive at all.

You might be asking—did I just write an entire blog post about an air conditioner? To which I say, heck yeah I did. And you might have too if your bedroom was finally cool enough during the dog days of summer to get a decent night’s sleep.

But wait, there’s more! Rather than suffering through the dog days of summer, you can get a 20% discount on your own NewAir Compact Portable Air Conditioner, 8,000 BTUs | NAC08KWH00. Visit this link and use code 20Weaver.
